The Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said Democrats were going too far, coming up with a bill that "reaches into every nook and cranny of American business." Republican Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, predicted that unlike the recent health care battle, this time bipartisan legislation eventually would pass.

Financial overhaul falls short in procedural vote.
Legislation to overhaul the nation’s system of financial regulation failed to clear a critical procedural hurdle in the Senate Monday afternoon, as Republicans succeeded in blocking Democratic efforts to bring the far-reaching bill to the Senate floor for debate. Senator Shelby, the lead Republican negotiator said that the changes he wants focus on three key areas: the particulars of a proposed regulator to protect consumers against lending abuses; the details of new government powers to wind down large, troubled firms without using taxpayer money; and measures to establish oversight of the sprawling and largely opaque market for financial derivatives.
The Administration's shell game with its "saved or created" job claims. Today, there are 129.7 million jobs. The folks at BigGovernment.com looked at the data and found that to justify the administration's current claim of 2.8 million jobs saved or created, they had to lower the baseline by 7 million jobs to only 126.9 million.

Arizona Governor Signs Controversial Immigration Enforcement Bill.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a controversial bill that seeks to crack down on illegal immigration. The sweeping measure will make it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally. It will also require local police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are in the country illegally.
